Ankara:Washington: Majorities of Americans and Canadians believe US President Donald Trump was wrong to impose new tariffs on Canada.

According to Anadolu Agency, a POLITICO Poll released Wednesday found that 56% of US respondents said Trump was wrong to impose tariffs on Canadian goods, while 26% supported the decision. In Canada, the opposition was even stronger, with 83% disagreeing with Trump's tariffs and only 8% in favor.

The poll also indicated that Canadians largely supported Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to impose reciprocal tariffs on US goods, with 71% in favor and 17% against. In contrast, Americans were more divided on Carney's response, with 33% agreeing and 31% disagreeing.

Conducted between September 13 and 15, the survey included 2,064 US adults and 2,119 Canadian adults, with a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points for the US sample and 2.1 points for the Canadian sample.

Trump imposed a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade negotiations broke down in August, prompting Canada to respond with matching tariffs on September 8. The US later announced an outright ban on certain Canadian imports, including motorcycles and whiskey, set to take effect on September 29.
