Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has lifted restrictions on Grok AI after the US platform X pledged to comply with Malaysian laws and introduce additional safety measures, local media outlet FMT reported Friday. The decision marks a significant step in the ongoing dialogue between Malaysia and the tech company to ensure the ethical use of artificial intelligence tools within the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, the decision followed a meeting between Malaysia's communications regulator and representatives of X. During this meeting, X committed to strengthening preventive and safety mechanisms for its artificial intelligence tools. This commitment was crucial in addressing the concerns raised by Malaysian authorities regarding the misuse of AI technology.

The regulator emphasized the importance of user safety, stating, 'User safety remains our priority. Any failure to comply with Malaysian laws will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the existing legal provisions.' This statement highlights Malaysia's firm stance on ensuring that technology companies adhere to local laws to protect its citizens.

Kuala Lumpur imposed temporary restrictions on Grok on January 11 following reports that the chatbot had been misused to generate obscene, sexually explicit, and non-consensual manipulated images, including content involving women and minors. The reports had raised alarm over the potential for AI tools to be used in harmful ways.

On January 15, Malaysian authorities stipulated that X would need to demonstrate that such misuse of Grok's AI tools would no longer occur before lifting the restrictions. This requirement was set to ensure that the platform takes concrete steps to prevent future misuse of its technology, safeguarding users from potential harm.
