Ankara: The Maldives and Malaysia have taken significant steps to deepen their defense and economic ties, as announced by the leaders of both nations. Kuala Lumpur has agreed in principle to support a $100 million financial facility requested by the Maldives.
According to Anadolu Agency, during a joint press conference held in the Malaysian capital, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim outlined the expansion of cooperation between the two countries. This includes collaboration in defense and Islamic affairs. President Muizzu extended an invitation to the Malaysian government and businesses to explore investment opportunities in the Maldives, focusing on sectors such as renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic finance.
Prime Minister Anwar confirmed Malaysia's commitment to supporting the $100 million facility requested by the Maldives Monetary Authority from Bank Negara Malaysia. He emphasized that the two central banks would work diligently on the mechanism and process to finalize the arrangement swiftly. Anwar also identified mineral exploration as a potential area for expanded economic cooperation between the two nations.
The leaders agreed to pursue greater visa facilitation, increase scholarship opportunities, and initiate joint research projects. In addition, both countries reiterated their unwavering support for the Palestinian people, advocating for their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
President Muizzu highlighted the urgent need for climate adaptation financing for small island developing states, emphasizing that climate change is a pressing issue for the Maldives. This call comes ahead of the upcoming COP31 in Trkiye in November.
The diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and the Maldives dates back to 1968, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $188 million in 2025. This recent development follows President Muizzu's official visit to Malaysia in April 2025, during which the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation across various sectors.
