Ankara: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to Trkiye on Thursday may mark the start of a new chapter in bilateral relations, as shifting geopolitical dynamics push Berlin to deepen cooperation with Ankara, foreign policy experts say.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ewald Koenig, a senior German political analyst, emphasized that Merz has prioritized strengthening Europe amid global uncertainties, necessitating closer cooperation with Trkiye on foreign policy, defense, and security. Koenig expressed optimism about the potential change in relations between Germany and Trkiye, acknowledging past fluctuations but highlighting Merz's intent to foster strong ties with Ankara.

Koenig, who operates the analysis platform diplo.news, pointed out that Germany's new coalition government, in place since May, has embraced a more realistic and pragmatic foreign policy. Unlike the previous administration, it seeks to enhance political dialogue and cooperation with Trkiye across crucial sectors.

This shift in approach is evident in recent comments from Berlin. Deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille underscored Trkiye's status as a 'strategically important' NATO ally, noting that Germany and Trkiye have 'many common issues to discuss,' with a particular focus on foreign and defense policy.
