Mexico city: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that there is "absolute coordination" with state governments following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), known as "El Mencho." Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of staying informed and maintaining calm, stating that "activities are proceeding normally throughout most of the country."
According to Anadolu Agency, unrest ensued after the operation targeting Oseguera, with the Defense Ministry reporting "various blockades and other reactions" following the federal forces' action. President Sheinbaum reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring peace, security, justice, and the well-being of Mexico.
The Mexican Defense Ministry detailed that Special Forces executed the operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, a stronghold of the CJNG, intending to apprehend Oseguera. However, during the mission, Mexican military personnel were attacked, prompting them to defend themselves. This confrontation led to the deaths of four CJNG members on the scene, with three others, including Ruben "N" (alias Mencho), succumbing to injuries during an airlift to Mexico City. Authorities are set to confirm Oseguera's identification through forensic processes.
Additionally, two other cartel members were arrested, and the operation resulted in the seizure of armored vehicles and weapons, including rocket launchers capable of downing aircraft. The killing of "El Mencho" incited violent reactions across several states, with reports of road blockades, burning vehicles, and armed clashes.
In response to the escalating violence, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a red alert and canceled in-person classes at schools on Monday.
