New York: The governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, made headlines by suggesting that China might be the only global power capable of brokering peace between Israel and Iran following Israel's latest military strike.

According to Anadolu Agency, Walz's comments came during an event hosted by the Center for American Progress. The event saw him being questioned by the group's president, Neera Tanden, on the escalating conflict between the two nations. Tanden remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating, "The fact that we have Israel striking Iran is escalatory. I think that would be an understatement."

In response, Walz, who is the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, pondered on which global entity could successfully mediate an agreement. He questioned, "Who is the voice in the world that can negotiate some type of agreement in this? Who holds the moral authority, who holds the ability to do that? Because we are not seen as a neutral actor, and we maybe never were." He then proposed China as a potential mediator, highlighting their possible role in peace negotiations.

Walz's ties to China, including his past experience as an English teacher there, have been noted, along with his previous praise for aspects of China's political system. However, his comments have drawn attention, particularly in light of China's controversial human rights record, including the treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority-a topic Walz did not address during the event.
