Mixed Results for US Stocks as Corporate Earnings and Trade Concerns Influence Markets

New york: The New York Stock Exchange ended Tuesday with mixed results, as major US companies reported their earnings and President Donald Trump provided uncertain signals regarding his forthcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.47%, or 218.16 points, closing at 46,924.74. Meanwhile, the S and P 500 remained nearly unchanged at 6,735.35 points, and the Nasdaq Composite experienced a slight decline of 0.16%, or 36.88 points, ending at 22,953.67.

General Motors surpassed market expectations and revised its annual profit forecast upward, resulting in a significant 14.9% rise in its share price. Coca-Cola's shares also saw a 4.1% increase following better-than-expected third-quarter earnings and revenue announcements. Additionally, 3M, a key player in the industrial sector, raised its annual profit forecast, which led to a 7.7% increase in its share value.

Conversely, Philip Morris, despite an upward revision of its annual profit forecast, witnessed a 3.8% drop in its shares. In the defense sector, companies like Lockheed Martin, RTX, and GE Aerospace adjusted their year-end profit forecasts. Lockheed Martin's shares fell by 3.2%, whereas RTX and GE Aerospace experienced gains of 7.7% and 1.3%, respectively.

The ongoing budget impasse has resulted in the US government remaining closed since October 1. The Senate rejected the interim budget package for the 11th time on Tuesday, with another vote expected on Wednesday.

On the international trade front, President Trump sent mixed signals about the anticipated talks between Washington and Beijing, which are expected to include participation from President Xi. Trump initially stated that he would meet Xi in South Korea within two weeks, but later remarked, "maybe it won't happen."
