Moldova: Moldova on Tuesday summoned Moscow's ambassador to Chisinau amid reports of an oil spill in the Dniester River, which the country said was caused by a Russian strike on a hydroelectric plant in southern Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry stated on Telegram that it summoned Ambassador-at-Large Oleg Ozerov and conveyed a protest note regarding the attack, which it reported took place on March 7. The Republic of Moldova strongly condemned the attack, citing the resulting oil spills into the Dniester River as major risks to the environment and the security of Moldova's water supply.

The Dniester River is crucial as it provides water for approximately 80% of Moldova's population and for 98% of the Chisinau municipality. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the cross-border impact of such actions, highlighting the threat to the environment, water security, and public health, and declared that such actions are unacceptable.

In response to the oil spill, Moldovan President Maia Sandu declared an environmental alert, attributing the incident to an attack on the Novodnistrovsk Hydroelectric Power Station in Ukraine's Chernivtsi region. She asserted on social media platform X that Russia bears full responsibility for the incident.

Authorities had initially detected oil slicks in the Dniester River last Tuesday. In response, several measures, including the installation of filters and dams, have been implemented to prevent further pollution. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced on Facebook that a 15-day environmental alert was approved during a government meeting. Russian authorities have not commented on the incident.
