Chisinau: A court in Moldova announced Wednesday that it had transferred the detained governor of the autonomous Gagauzia region to house arrest. Moldovan channel TV8 reported that a court in the nation's capital Chisinau decided to transfer Evgenia Gutul from prison to house arrest for 30 days.

According to Anadolu Agency, Gutul expressed her determination to pursue justice as she spoke to journalists after leaving the court. Her lawyer, speaking to Russian state news agency RIA, revealed plans to file an appeal aiming for her complete release.

Gutul was detained at Chisinau International Airport on March 25 in connection with a criminal case, as stated by the Moldovan National Anticorruption Center. The case alleges violations of campaign finance law and forgery related to the 2023 elections.

Gagauzia is an autonomous region in Moldova, home to approximately 120,000 Gagauz people, an Orthodox Christian, Turkic community that speaks Gagauz Turkish. The Kremlin has criticized Moldova for Gutul's detention, urging the nation to allow freedom of action for all political forces within its borders.

Gutul, representing the Shor party, secured victory in the regional governor's election in Gagauzia in May 2023.
