Chisinau: Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that her country's EU membership is a guarantee of a "future of peace, freedom, and development." She emphasized that only within the EU can Moldova be protected and safe. This was announced during a joint press conference with European Council President Antonio Costa.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Sandu highlighted that Moldova submitted its application for EU membership three years ago, and Costa's visit underscores the importance of this event. Sandu described the EU as Moldova's "anchor for development," noting the guidance provided by the 27-member bloc towards building a just society and a modern economy over the past two decades.

Sandu recalled challenging times when Moldova faced pressure from the Kremlin regarding natural gas supplies and economic challenges, yet maintained its commitment to the European path. She remarked that efforts by some politicians to divert from this path were thwarted by the Moldovan people through democratic elections and a referendum last year that confirmed the desire for an irreversible European path.

President Sandu also expressed that Moldova's security is now a part of a broader European effort. She highlighted the role of the EU in bolstering Moldova's capacity to resist insecurity, hybrid threats, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns.

European Council President Antonio Costa reaffirmed the EU's commitment to standing for peace and working with Moldova to shape a shared future. Costa acknowledged attempts to undermine Moldova's progress through energy blackmail and misinformation but praised the Moldovan people's resolve in strengthening the European path.

Costa criticized the use of energy as a weapon, stating it is "unacceptable," and assured that the EU is prepared to support Moldova in achieving energy independence. Moldova officially became a candidate for EU membership on June 22, 2022, following its application submission on March 3 of the same year.
