Chisinau: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated Paris' firm support for Moldova's EU membership aspirations, declaring that the country's future is inseparable from Europe. Speaking at celebrations in Chisinau to mark the 34th anniversary of Moldova's independence, Macron stood alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He said their joint presence is a symbol of Europe's solidarity with Moldova at a time when its sovereignty and democracy face challenges.
According to Anadolu Agency, Macron emphasized the significance of attending the symbolic event, which marks Moldova's journey towards sovereignty and freedom. He conveyed a message of respect, friendship, solidarity, and confidence to the Moldovan people. Macron highlighted Moldova's historic step of embedding its European orientation in its constitution last year, three years after formally applying for EU membership.
He acknowledged the challenging EU accession process but showcased it as a historic opportunity for Moldova's prosperity and security. Macron stressed that EU membership represents a chance for the modernization of Moldova, offering opportunities for youth and economic actors and access to a market of 450 million consumers.
Macron commended Moldova's progress on reforms, particularly in the justice system and economic modernization. He noted that the EU has recently approved the disbursement of the first payments under a £1.9 billion growth and reform plan. France, he stated, would continue to provide technical expertise, financial support, and cultural cooperation, with projects in energy, infrastructure, education, and heritage restoration.
He announced initiatives like a new double degree program in law between the Sorbonne and Moldova State University and the restoration of historic buildings in Chisinau. Addressing regional security, Macron criticized Russia's actions in Ukraine and dismissed claims by the Kremlin that the EU sought to prolong conflicts or oppress nations. He reinforced that the European Union is an alliance of prosperity and peace, respecting sovereignty.
Macron emphasized Moldova's European path as a commitment to peace, democracy, and dignity. He reiterated the shared confidence in Moldova's future within the European Union, marking his presence as a tribute to the Moldovan people and their aspirations.
