Moldova’s President Accuses Russia of Election Interference to Target EU

Chisinau: Moldovan President Maia Sandu claimed that Russia attempted to influence Moldova's recent parliamentary elections to gain control of power in Chisinau, with the ultimate aim of targeting the European Union. According to Anadolu Agency, Sandu stated that Moscow's involvement in the elections was strategically motivated rather than a direct interest in Moldova itself. She described Moldova as a strategic platform from which Russia could potentially challenge the EU. Sandu emphasized that Moldova lacks significant natural resources, implying that Russia's interest was more geopolitical than economic. Sandu praised the Moldovan electorate for their "honest and courageous" votes, asserting that the election results sent a strong message that the country's decisions are made domestically. She expressed hope that Moldova's example could inspire other former Soviet states to resist Russian influence and maintain their sovereignty. The president also highlighted that Russia can no longer use energy or tr ade as leverage over Moldova. She mentioned the upcoming operational status of the Chisinau-Vulcanesti power line, which will provide alternatives and reduce the country's dependency on the Russian Federation. Sandu further emphasized Moldova's commitment to a peaceful domestic agenda with leaders loyal to the nation and called on the EU to enhance its resilience. Sandu reiterated Moldova's desire for freedom and significance on the international stage, rejecting the notion that only large states matter. She expressed a wish for Moldova and other small countries to have their sovereignty respected and valued. Moldova's application for EU membership in 2022 marked a significant step in this direction, although the negotiation process has faced challenges from some EU member states.
