Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills at Least 50 in Rakhine State

Kyauktaw:At least 50 people have died following an airstrike by the Myanmar military in Kyauktaw township, located in northern Rakhine state. The attack, which took place on Monday, targeted a bridge and a market area controlled by an opposition group.

According to Anadolu Agency, the airstrike involved a military jet that bombed the Kissapanadi Bridge, also known as the Kaladan Bridge, and a bustling marketplace referred to as the 'Indian Market.' The attack resulted in 58 injuries among pedestrians, shoppers, and laborers present at the scene.

This recent assault on Kyauktaw, a coastal town along the Kaladan River, marks one of the most lethal incidents since Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency of Myanmar in April. The country continues to be embroiled in a prolonged civil war, which intensified after the February 2021 coup that ousted the elected government.

Various ethnic opposition groups continue to resist Min's government across Myanmar. Rakhine state, primarily inhabited by the Rohingya community, has a history of persecution by the Burmese military and other factions. The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, have suffered significant displacement from Myanmar, a Buddhist-majority nation, over the years.
