Najaf:Iraq's Najaf International Airport will resume flights with Iran on Sunday, initially starting with three evening flights, as announced by the airport administration on Saturday. This development follows the United States granting a limited waiver to its sanctions program.
According to Anadolu Agency, several Iranian flights will resume after a suspension lasting several days, as reported by the official Iraqi News Agency.
Iranian flight traffic is projected to increase gradually in the coming days, contingent on airline schedules. An agreement was announced by the Iraqi prime minister's media office on Friday, allowing Iranian airlines to operate 40 flights daily to and from Najaf International Airport, with the exception of Mahan Air.
This arrangement is aimed at facilitating travel to and from Iraq while supporting humanitarian needs, medical treatment, tourism, and education. Al-Zaidi expressed appreciation for the 'positive response' from the US to Iraq's efforts and its cooperation in granting the requested exemption.
Last month, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced sanctions to prevent Iranian airlines from flying to various countries. These sanctions are part of the US's economic pressure campaign against Iran, as negotiations to end the US-Israeli conflict against the Islamic Republic that began on February 28 continue through mediators.
