North darfur: At least 970 Sudanese civilians were displaced in a single day from a village in Umm Baru locality in North Darfur due to worsening insecurity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the UN agency stated that field teams estimated 970 people had fled the village of Mizbat in Umm Baru on November 1 as a result of escalating violence. The displaced individuals have relocated to various areas within Umm Baru, and the situation remains tense and volatile.

The IOM warned of potential further displacement as insecurity persists in Umm Baru, which is situated 300 kilometers northwest of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state. On October 26, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of El-Fasher and were accused of committing 'massacres' against civilians by local and international organizations. These actions have raised concerns that the assault could lead to the geographical partition of Sudan.

On Wednesday, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, acknowledged that 'violations' had occurred by his forces in El-Fasher, claiming that investigation committees had been formed. Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in a conflict that regional and international mediations have been unable to resolve. The ongoing war has resulted in the deaths of 20,000 people and has displaced more than 15 million as refugees and internally displaced persons, according to UN and local reports.
