Nepal Partially Halts Search for Over 5,200 Missing After Devastating Floods

Ankara:Search and rescue operations have been partially suspended in Nepal amid ongoing efforts to locate more than 5,200 people missing following severe flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border in August.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Nepalese government has halted operations in areas where there is no indication of finding survivors or missing persons. However, efforts continue in key locations such as tunnels.

The floods impacted at least six hydropower projects on the Nepalese side, with approximately 900 personnel deployed at these sites. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal reported that 1,453 people have died, 13,795 have been rescued, and 5,285 remain missing, including 636 foreigners.

On the Chinese side, the death toll stands at 43, with 519 missing, including 261 foreigners in the Tibet region, known to Beijing as the Xizang autonomous region.

The disaster occurred on August 26 when a glacier on Nepal's Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). This event triggered a massive ice-rock avalanche that caused widespread destruction in the valleys along the border.

The floodwaters and mudslides severely impacted several districts in Nepal, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Kavre, as well as the Kathmandu Valley. The Gyirong border crossing in Xizang was also buried by the debris.
