Tel aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the military to accelerate its air campaign against Iran for a 48-hour period, aiming to dismantle as much of the country's arms industry as possible before the United States potentially moves toward a ceasefire.
According to Anadolu Agency, the directive was issued after Netanyahu's government acquired a copy of a US-drafted 15-point plan to end the conflict. The Israeli leadership reportedly concluded that the plan failed to adequately address Iran's nuclear program or its ballistic missile capabilities. Israeli officials are concerned that US President Donald Trump might announce peace talks imminently.
Regarding the reported plan, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt urged caution, indicating that while a plan had been "floated in the media," the White House had not confirmed it. Leavitt noted that, "There are elements of truth to it, but some of the stories I read were not entirely factual."
Netanyahu's order was issued during a meeting at a military headquarters on Tuesday, following briefings from senior commanders regarding the remaining viable targets.
The urgency of the strikes underscores a fundamental limitation Israel faces in the conflict. The decision to end the war rests solely with Trump, leaving Netanyahu with limited influence over its conclusion. Israeli officials remain divided on the timeline, with some advocating for an additional week to address a broader list of targets, while others favor an earlier cessation. Three officials noted that the most significant military gains were achieved in the opening week, with growing concerns over international opinion, the war's financial costs, and the psychological and physical toll on Israel's population.
The US and Israel have been conducting operations against Iran since February 28, resulting in over 1,340 casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with strikes across the region, affecting global oil flows and aviation. Trump paused strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure on Monday, while indirect contacts between the US and Iran reportedly continue.
