Netanyahu’s Political Struggles and Military Moves: A Complex Interplay

Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent military actions against Iran have been viewed as a strategic move to bolster his political survival amid corruption charges and declining domestic support. Just a day before the Israeli airstrikes on Iran, Netanyahu narrowly survived a critical Knesset vote that could have led to the collapse of his government.

According to Anadolu Agency, the airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure, reportedly resulting in significant casualties including senior military figures and hundreds of civilians. These military maneuvers, presented by Israel as necessary to neutralize Iran's nuclear ambitions, have escalated tensions between the two nations to a point where diplomacy seems nearly impossible as long as the current governments in Israel and Iran remain in power.

Netanyahu's political strategy appears to rely heavily on projecting external threats to unify his fragile government, which is characterized by internal divisions between secular and ultra-Orthodox, nationalist and technocratic factions. The conflict with Iran, much like previous engagements with Gaza and Lebanon, is seen as an attempt to consolidate domestic support by rallying the population against a perceived existential enemy.

Internationally, the conflict has also provided Netanyahu with support from Western governments, including the G7 and the EU, despite shifting public opinions in those regions. Meanwhile, the focus on Iran has diverted attention from ongoing issues in Gaza, allowing Netanyahu some respite from international criticism over Israeli actions there.

Before the escalation with Iran, former U.S. President Donald Trump had shown signs of pursuing diplomacy with Iran, which could conflict with Netanyahu's interests. However, Trump's alignment with Israel in urging Iranians to evacuate Tehran suggests a complex interplay of international relations that Netanyahu is navigating to maintain his grip on power.

Netanyahu's coalition government has seen resignations over failures in Gaza, allowing him to consolidate power with more hardline figures. However, this approach may further isolate Israel diplomatically and economically, adding to the financial burden of its military actions.

The ongoing conflict reflects a pattern where regimes under threat tend to engage in aggressive military actions. Netanyahu's focus on military strategies for political survival risks exacerbating regional instability, potentially affecting Israel's own security and global standing.

As Netanyahu resists efforts to de-escalate, sustained international pressure could be the key to shifting the trajectory towards regional stability. Without such pressure, Netanyahu's strategies may continue to fuel regional tensions, with significant implications for Israel's future.
