New York:New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor in a sexual assault case at Cornell University.
According to Anadolu Agency, the case involves a woman who reported in 2024 that she was gang-raped at a Cornell fraternity house. The woman has accused campus police and local prosecutors of failing her, claiming that her statement of being "100% confident that she had been raped" was not included in the report submitted to prosecutors.
Governor Hochul expressed her concerns that the woman had been failed by those with a duty to protect her and criticized the decision of prosecutors not to pursue charges based on an incomplete account and without interviewing the victim.
In response to these issues, Hochul used her authority to appoint Attorney General James as an independent special prosecutor. James stated that her office would conduct a thorough review of the case, gather evidence, and interview witnesses, pursuing criminal charges if the evidence supports them.
