New york city: New York City's police commissioner said Monday there is no information connecting an explosive device attack outside the mayor's residence to the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran, though the city remains on heightened alert.

According to Anadolu Agency, New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a press conference at Gracie Mansion alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani that there is no evidence linking this incident to overseas events in Iran. Tisch confirmed the attack is being investigated as ISIS (Daesh)-inspired terrorism. Two suspects will face prosecution in federal court in Manhattan, with a complaint detailing criminal charges and factual allegations.

The explosive devices utilized by the suspects contained triacetone triperoxide, a dangerous homemade explosive known for its use in attacks worldwide, according to Tisch. The bomb squad successfully neutralized both devices, and explosive evidence samples were sent to an FBI laboratory for further analysis. A third device tested negative for any explosive material.

Despite the absence of a direct Iran connection, Tisch noted that New York has been on heightened alert since the start of US attacks on Iran on Feb. 28. The city will continue to deploy additional counterterrorism resources throughout the five boroughs, including heavy weapons teams, canine units, and aviation units.

Mayor Mamdani condemned the protest, describing it as "rooted in white supremacy." As the first Muslim mayor, he acknowledged that anti-Muslim bigotry is not new to him or the one million Muslim New Yorkers who call the city home. While finding the protest "appalling," Mamdani emphasized that protests should be allowed to happen, asserting that violence from protests or counter-protests will never be tolerated.

The NYPD is working with the FBI through the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York to investigate the attack. Two devices were thrown Saturday toward protesters outside Gracie Mansion, identified as improvised explosives capable of causing serious injury or death, Tisch explained on Sunday.
