Copenhagen: The Nordic and Baltic countries on Wednesday reiterated their continued support for embattled Ukraine, according to an official statement. Defense ministers from Nordic countries, Baltic countries, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Germany, and Ukraine gathered in Denmark for a two-day meeting to discuss the war in Ukraine. According to Anadolu Agency, the defense ministers, hosted by their Danish counterpart Troels Lund Poulsen, "reaffirmed their steadfast support to Ukraine and their commitment to continue and develop Northern Europe's military assistance to Ukraine and to strengthen industrial cooperation," as stated in an official statement from the Danish Defense Ministry released afterward. The ministers agreed to enhance military support, including collaboration with the Northern European and Ukrainian defense industries to bolster Ukraine's industrial and technological capacity and the European defense industry's potential. The meeting participants emphasized that "there can be no peace t alks without Ukraine," and discussed the security threats and challenges to Eastern borders of the Alliance. The Northern Group, an informal coalition, includes the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. This reaffirmation of support comes just two months before Donald Trump is expected to return to the Oval Office for his second term as US president. Trump has been critical of the $64.1 billion in military aid provided by the US to Ukraine and has pledged to end the war quickly, though the means remain unspecified. The possible shift in US support has driven many European countries to underline their commitment to Ukraine, though it remains uncertain if their support alone would suffice to sustain Kyiv's war effort, which has persisted for over 1,000 days since Russia initiated the conflict in February 2022.
