New york city: North Korea has announced that it is not bound by any treaty concerning the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Thursday. This declaration comes amid the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) being held at the United Nations headquarters.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kim Song, North Korea's permanent representative to the United Nations, criticized the United States and several other countries for what he described as 'tarnishing the atmosphere' at the conference by expressing concerns over North Korea's nuclear capabilities. The conference, currently underway in New York City, gathers diplomats to address increasing worries about nuclear risks and strategic rivalry.
Kim Song emphasized that North Korea's status as a nuclear weapons state remains unchanged despite external pressures or unilateral desires. He reiterated, "The DPRK is not bound by the NPT in any case."
Kim further criticized the NPT review conference for deviating from its original mission of promoting nuclear disarmament and addressing the root causes of nuclear conflict dangers. He accused the conference of becoming a platform for what he described as malicious accusations against sovereign states, allegedly driven by the political motives of the U.S. and Western forces. Kim argued that these actions are fundamentally undermining the global non-proliferation system.
