Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday commended Norway for its ongoing support, noting that the financial and military aid provided by the country is crucial for enduring the winter amidst Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, as well as fortifying Ukraine's long-term defense.
According to Anadolu Agency, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, during his visit to Kyiv, committed to a new aid package valued at $8.5 billion and stressed that a ceasefire should come before any peace talks. At a joint press conference, Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia has been intentionally targeting Ukraine's gas production sites and electricity facilities to disrupt winter preparations. He expressed gratitude for Norway's support in purchasing gas, recalling that cooperation with Norway last winter enabled at least one million families to keep their homes heated.
Zelenskyy noted that Oslo's decision to continue financing gas purchases this year remains critical. He highlighted the ongoing challenges and expressed anticipation for Norway's future actions in support of Ukraine. Store reassured Ukraine of Norway's continued backing, announcing his plan to propose an $8.5 billion allocation to Norway's parliament in 2026. He underlined that Norway's assistance will be tailored to meet Ukraine's specific needs, particularly concerning energy and defense sectors.
Store reiterated the importance of strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities as a fundamental guarantee of its security. He affirmed Norway's commitment to responding to Ukraine's requirements, especially in defense. The Norwegian prime minister also supported a ceasefire as a prerequisite for negotiations, emphasizing that the cessation of hostilities is essential for serious talks-a concept initially proposed by the US.
Store mentioned that security guarantees for Ukraine should involve coordination between Europe and Washington, with Norway playing an active role. He suggested that this coordination would be crucial for training the Ukrainian army, enhancing air defense, and building long-term capacity. Zelenskyy expressed eagerness to collaborate with Norway on air defense training and coastline protection, acknowledging Norway's extensive experience in these areas as vital for future security guarantees.
