New york: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called on the UN Security Council to take urgent action to uphold international law, ensure accountability, and advance Palestine's admission as a full member of the United Nations, citing ongoing Israeli violations despite a ceasefire agreement.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trkiye's UN envoy, Ahmet Yildiz, delivered a statement on behalf of the OIC at the Council, noting that the ceasefire agreement concluded in October 2025 between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas was "a critical turning point towards ending the devastating hostilities." However, he cautioned that the implementation of the agreement remains at risk.
"While the ceasefire has reduced large-scale violence and facilitated increased humanitarian access, it remains fragile, with recurrent Israeli attacks and ongoing constraints on humanitarian access, impeding life-saving assistance from reaching the Palestinian population, including further measures against UNRWA and international humanitarian organizations," Yildiz stated.
Yildiz acknowledged international efforts to maintain the ceasefire, highlighting the role of President Donald Trump of the United States but emphasized that Israel's actions continue to undermine progress.
The OIC welcomed political developments tied to the agreement, with Yildiz expressing support for "the commencement of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement" and the formation of "the Palestinian committee to administer the Gaza Strip."
Calling for decisive international action, Yildiz reiterated the need for the Security Council to expedite Palestine's admission as a full member of the United Nations, describing it as "essential for a just and lasting peace and the credibility of the multilateral system."
He stressed the importance of humanitarian coordination and the roles of various UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, in ensuring a coordinated humanitarian response.
The OIC emphasized that "lasting peace in the Middle East requires Israel's complete withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories, including the occupied Syrian Golan, and full compliance with Security Council resolutions."
Condemning Israel's actions beyond Palestine, the group recalled Israel's incursions into Syrian territory and violations of the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon.
"In conclusion, the OIC group urges the Security Council to act with urgency and unity to uphold international law, ensure accountability, and end the illegal Israeli occupation and injustices faced by the Palestinian people," Yildiz concluded.
