Istanbul: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran in a draft resolution issued after its 51st Council of Foreign Ministers session held in Istanbul. The resolution, identified as No. 69/51-POL, specifically addressed the aggressions by Israel against Iran.
According to Anadolu Agency, the document criticized the Israeli attacks on Iran, which included military assaults on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities, as well as the assassination of scientists, military commanders, and civilians. These actions were deemed violations of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. The resolution expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and government, emphasizing the need to halt Israeli attacks and urging the international community to prevent conflicts that threaten peace and security.
The OIC highlighted UN Security Council Resolution 487, which condemns Israel's attacks on nuclear facilities, and referenced IAEA General Conference resolutions that criticize such actions against IAEA Member States. The document reaffirmed Iran's right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and called for a Middle East free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.
Israel and the US were accused of violating IAEA resolutions through attacks on nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan. The IAEA was urged to condemn these actions and report them to the UN Security Council. The draft resolution called for Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and place its nuclear activities under IAEA safeguards, condemning the attacks as violations of international law and threats to peace.
The resolution demanded an end to Israeli aggression against Iran and emphasized accountability under international law. It called on the UN Security Council to address the threat to peace and take measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to compel Israel to cease its aggression. OIC members of the Security Council were urged to secure a resolution for Israel's compliance with international law.
The draft reaffirmed Iran's rights to self-defense and sovereignty and condemned the violation of Iraqi airspace. It called on OIC Ambassadorial Groups to convey the OIC's position to international organizations and civil societies, and requested UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to register the resolution as an official UN document. The OIC pledged to remain engaged on the issue.
