Abu Dhabi:Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models have evolved to surpass the intelligence of the world's brightest scientists and can now perform significant portions of white-collar work, according to OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman. Altman made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference in the United Arab Emirates.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Altman highlighted a dramatic leap in AI capabilities over the past year. He noted that at the beginning of the year, AI models were generally not as intelligent as the top scientists, but have since surpassed them in intelligence. AI's ability to perform various white-collar jobs has also significantly increased, he added.
Altman emphasized the importance of retaining human judgment, creativity, and accountability in the deployment of AI technology, despite its disruptive impact on global economies and employment. He stressed that people should remain in control of the future and that AI should serve as a tool for people, rather than taking over decision-making roles.
Addressing concerns about the electricity demands of AI computing infrastructure, Altman identified physical power supply as a major bottleneck for the sector. He explained that while progress can be made in many areas, the physical world's limitations in powering AI will remain a significant factor in costs and availability.
Altman also reported a significant increase in global per capita token consumption, rising from nearly zero six years ago to approximately 100,000 tokens per month. He noted that top institutional users consume around 500 billion tokens each month. Furthermore, he highlighted that about 80% of young people in the UAE use ChatGPT weekly, demonstrating the host nation's rapid technology adoption.
During the event, OpenAI announced partnerships with Emirati technology group G42 and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, marking the first global deployment of OpenAI's frontier models by an energy company.
