Tel Aviv: Over 200 former Israeli police officials have signed their first petition demanding a prisoner swap with Palestinians, signaling a growing wave of calls for an end to Israel's ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. The petition, reported by Israeli media on Wednesday, highlights a significant shift as it includes the signatures of eight former police chiefs, among them the former Tel Aviv District Police Chief, Ami Eshed, who was dismissed in 2023 by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
According to Anadolu Agency, the former officials are calling for the immediate return of Israeli hostages in Gaza through a negotiated deal, alongside an end to the Gaza conflict. The signatories argue that the current military operations in Gaza are motivated by personal and political agendas rather than concerns of national security. This petition is part of a broader movement, with 28 petitions already signed by military personnel, ex-police members, and civilian professionals, totaling nearly 29,000 signatories.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, under increasing pressure to halt the conflict, has criticized the petitioners, accusing them of attempting to undermine his government. In a statement, Netanyahu dismissed the signatories as "a small handful of fringe elements," asserting that their letters do not represent the views of Israeli soldiers.
The petitions emerge following the breakdown of a ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchange deal initiated on January 19, mediated by Qatar and Egypt with support from the US. Although the Palestinian group Hamas complied with the agreement, Netanyahu's government, under pressure from its far-right coalition, resumed military operations on March 18, stalling further negotiations.
Since October 2023, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 51,000 Palestinians in Gaza, predominantly women and children. This has led to international legal actions, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in the enclave.
