Over 260 Rohingya Refugees Arrive Safely in Indonesia’s Aceh

Aceh: Over 260 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, have arrived in Indonesia’s easternmost province of Aceh, local media reported on Monday. Some 264 refugees, who were stranded at sea in two boats, reached East Aceh, according to Aceh Online.

According to Anadolu Agency, local police chief Surya Dharma stated that the information about the two boats was initially obtained from fishermen who spotted the vessels carrying the refugees. Dharma mentioned that these individuals would be relocated to the Rohingya refugee camp situated in the Peureulak Timur district in East Aceh.

In a related incident last November, Indonesian fishermen rescued 116 Rohingya refugees, primarily women and children, after their boat sank off the coast of Aceh. Meanwhile, on Friday, Malaysian authorities detained 196 Rohingya refugees when their boat ran aground near Teluk Yu beach on Langkawi, a northeastern resort island.

Furthermore, on Saturday, Malaysian authorities reportedly turned away two boats carrying approximately 300 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. The exodus of hundreds of Rohingya from Myanmar is a result of persecution by the junta regime and other ethnic armed groups. Indonesia, along with Bangladesh, has become one of the main destinations for these refugees seeking safety via sea.
