Islamabad: Pakistan on Monday welcomed the announcement by the PKK terror group to dissolve and lay down arms, calling it a 'significant step' toward a 'terror-free Trkiye.' Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the development on social media, highlighting the determination of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish people to move toward 'reconciliation, unity and stability.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Prime Minister Sharif expressed that the development reflects the unflinching resolve of the Turkish leadership under President Erdogan and the Turkish nation to continue their progress. Sharif emphasized that Pakistan and Trkiye remain committed to eradicating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

In a separate statement, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry echoed the Prime Minister's sentiments, welcoming the dissolution of the PKK terror group. The ministry acknowledged this development as an important step toward sustainable peace and stability. It also emphasized the deep-rooted fraternal ties between Pakistan and Trkiye and their mutual support in areas of counterterrorism.

The PKK's decision follows a February statement by jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who called for the group's dissolution and an end to its armed campaign, which has lasted over four decades. In its 40-year terror campaign against Trkiye, the PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Trkiye, the US, and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths, including women, children, and infants. The YPG/PYD is the PKK's Syrian affiliate.

Earlier on Monday, ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party spokesman Omer Celik also welcomed the PKK's announcement, describing it as a key step.
