Tehran: Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is set to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, as announced by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday. The visit is aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and reinforcing efforts towards peace and security in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the visit by Munir and his delegation comes at a critical time as Pakistan continues to play a mediating role between Iran and the United States. Pakistan has maintained close communication with both nations amidst ongoing tensions. The US and Iran, after signing a memorandum of understanding on June 17, have been engaged in negotiations for a final agreement. However, these talks have faced obstacles due to disputes over security assurances and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy and trade.

In recent developments, between July 8 and July 24, there was an exchange of military strikes between the US and Iran. The US initiated attacks on Iranian targets, prompting Iran to retaliate by striking US military facilities and assets in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Munir's discussions with senior Iranian officials during his visit are expected to address these issues and explore pathways to de-escalate tensions.
