Ankara:The Central Elections Commission has received a total of nine applications from electoral lists seeking to contest the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections. The most recent application came from the 'Palestine for All' list.
According to Anadolu Agency, The commission emphasized that submitting an application does not equate to acceptance or formal registration. Each application must undergo a process of review and verification in accordance with the law and commission procedures. The registration period began on September 26 and is scheduled to end on October 13.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on July 9 that legislative elections would take place on November 28 in occupied East Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. These elections would be the first of their kind since 2006.
Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh indicated on August 2 that if voting were obstructed in Gaza or any other Palestinian territories, an alternative approach would be taken. This would involve forming the Palestinian National Council by consensus, leveraging the Palestine Liberation Organization's role as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
Approximately 2.97 million Palestinians are eligible to vote, with 1.59 million in the West Bank, 1.24 million in Gaza, and 140,000 holding Jerusalem identity cards. The last elections resulted in Hamas gaining a majority, leading to a political division with Fatah, and the subsequent control of Gaza by Hamas, while the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority retained authority in the West Bank.
The Palestinian Legislative Council has not been active since 2007, following a Supreme Constitutional Court order for its dissolution in 2018.
