Accra:According to Anadolu Agency, Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh has responded to criticism from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar regarding the postponement of Palestinian elections. Al-Sheikh claims that Israeli actions were the true cause of the delay, countering Saar's accusations against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Al-Sheikh accused Saar of pretending to support Palestinian democracy while simultaneously attacking Abbas' decision to postpone the elections. He expressed these views on the social media platform X, stating that Saar, whom he accuses of daily violence against Palestinians, now positions himself as a critic of Palestinian electoral processes.
Gideon Saar had criticized Abbas for corruption and for misleading the international community about the election delay. Saar dismissed Palestinian claims that Israeli measures impeded the elections, suggesting these assertions were attempts to avoid responsibility.
President Abbas has issued a decree rescheduling the presidential and legislative elections for September 11, 2027, replacing the previously planned date in November. Approximately 2.97 million Palestinians are eligible to vote, with voters distributed across the occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The last Palestinian legislative elections took place in 2006, resulting in a majority victory for Hamas.
