New york: The partial release of documents linked to the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has sparked fresh controversy in the US, drawing criticism from lawmakers and public figures who accuse the Justice Department of withholding information required by law.
According to Anadolu Agency, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed her discontent, stating that the newly released material represents only a small portion of the full Epstein record. She highlighted that the document release is a minority of the files and criticized the Justice Department under Pam Bondi for allegedly hiding the majority of the documents, which are required by law to be released. Ocasio-Cortez voiced her concerns on the US social media platform X.
Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, a member of the House Oversight Committee, also condemned the limited disclosure, describing it as 'outrageous and incredibly concerning.' His comments echo the growing frustration among lawmakers who are demanding full transparency.
On the other side of the political aisle, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie claimed that the fallout from the document release led to political pressure against him. He alleged that a superPAC funded by prominent billionaires, including Miriam Adelson, Paul Singer, and John Paulson, bought $800,000 worth of TV ads against him shortly after the release. Massie noted that John Paulson himself appears in Epstein's notorious black book.
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, also weighed in on the controversy, distancing himself from any connection to Epstein. He accused unnamed actors of attempting to shift blame onto him and emphasized that he had never attended Epstein's parties, flown on his plane, or visited his island. Musk called for the prosecution of those who have committed serious crimes.
Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his New York City jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. In 2008, he pleaded guilty and was convicted of procuring a minor for prostitution in Florida, a conviction critics have labeled a "sweetheart deal." Victims of Epstein have alleged that he operated a vast sex trafficking network involving members of the wealthy and political elite.
The case continues to be a politically charged issue in the US, with lawmakers and victims' advocates across the spectrum demanding greater transparency about Epstein's network of associates and any individuals who may have facilitated his crimes.
