Munich: Palestine's foreign minister on Sunday declared that peace with Israel is "not possible" as long as Palestinian rights are continuously violated, emphasizing the necessity for adherence to international law and the cessation of unilateral actions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Varsen Aghabekian Shaheen, speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, expressed that Israeli actions in occupied territories, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, such as illegal settlement expansions, jeopardize any potential for a negotiated peace settlement. Shaheen emphasized that these unilateral measures should be deemed invalid, highlighting that annexation is a breach of international law and a crime needing cessation.
Shaheen also discussed the Gaza ceasefire process, indicating that advancing to the next stage relies on the complete fulfillment of initial commitments. She noted that the first phase concluded with an exchange of hostages and prisoners, while the second phase involves rebuilding the enclave devastated by two years of Israeli bombing. Shaheen remarked on the partial nature of the current ceasefire, pointing out the inadequate flow of humanitarian aid and the limited opening of the Rafah border crossing, calling for additional measures to facilitate a smooth transition.
Urging for robust international intervention, Shaheen referenced existing legal and diplomatic frameworks, imploring the global community to acknowledge and enforce international law. She criticized Israel for ongoing actions that she claims illustrate a lack of commitment to peace, arguing that genuine peace efforts would involve halting violations of international law and Palestinian rights. Shaheen urged the international community to uphold international law, including the International Court of Justice ruling and UN Resolution 2334, which she stated declare settlements and occupations illegal.
Shaheen also addressed her appeal to Germany and Finland to join other European nations in recognizing Palestine, asserting that recognition aligns with supporting a two-state solution and adherence to international law. On regional diplomacy, she acknowledged Trkiye's significant role in reconciliation and humanitarian aid efforts, highlighting its importance as a key regional player in promoting peace.
