Pentagon Chief Announces Leadership Overhaul and New Military Directives

Quantico: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed a gathering of over 800 senior military officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, announcing imminent leadership changes aimed at overhauling military culture, fitness, and leadership standards. Hegseth emphasized the need for these changes to transform the existing military environment.

According to Anadolu Agency, Hegseth criticized the current focus on diversity and climate issues within the military, suggesting they detract from combat readiness. He argued that the existing leadership, which he believes was promoted based on diversity quotas rather than merit, is not conducive to the cultural shift he envisions. The Pentagon chief expressed the need to clear distractions and restore focus on leadership and combat preparedness.

Hegseth announced stringent new orders intended to reshape military standards. Combat positions will now adhere to the highest male standards, with a new combat field test to be implemented, designed to be executable in any environment with full combat gear. Fitness assessments will be gender-neutral, age-normed, and require a minimum score of 70%. He criticized the current state of military fitness, stressing the unacceptability of physically unfit generals and admirals.

The new directives include biannual physical training and height and weight checks for all service members. Grooming standards will see stricter enforcement, ending allowances for beards and long hair. Additionally, Hegseth announced a reassessment of standards related to leadership, discipline, and the handling of complaints, aiming to give commanders more authority while minimizing frivolous grievances.

Hegseth also outlined changes to personnel record management, ensuring minor infractions do not impede career progression. He proposed reducing mandatory training to allocate more time for practical military activities. While acknowledging the contributions of female troops, he reiterated the necessity for high, gender-neutral physical standards in combat roles.
