Pentagon Prepares Military Bases for Independent Operation Amid Major Conflict

Washington:The Pentagon is taking steps to ensure that US military bases can operate independently for at least 90 days during a major conflict, safeguarding essential services and supplies from disruptions to civilian infrastructure and global supply chains.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the initiative, named FORTRESS, was detailed in documents reviewed by Fox News Digital. Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell emphasized the need for the military to avoid reliance on civilian municipal infrastructure, citing it as an "intolerable risk" for national defense.

FORTRESS includes plans for portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage, and microgrids to maintain base operations during power outages. The initiative also involves securing strategic reserves of munitions, fuel, critical minerals, electronics, spare parts, and medical supplies, along with ensuring at least two qualified supply or production pathways for critical defense needs.

Additionally, the initiative aims to prepare civilian factories for defense production through the Civil Reserve Manufacturing Network, addressing contracts, cybersecurity, and conversion procedures with advance planning. Regular industrial stress tests and mobilization exercises are also part of the strategy.

FORTRESS seeks to protect military communications, navigation, and satellite capabilities from interference, including GPS jamming and disruptions to space-based assets. Parnell described the initiative as an essential insurance policy to maintain operational capability in the face of infrastructure and supply chain disruptions.
