Manchester: Spanish manager Pep Guardiola, renowned for his vocal solidarity with Palestine and speaking out against Israel's genocide in Gaza, announced that he will step down as Manchester City manager after a highly successful 10-year spell.
According to Anadolu Agency, beyond his achievements as a head coach, Guardiola emerged as one of football's most high-profile figures to openly and consistently condemn Israel's deadly war in Gaza, calling on people across the world not to remain silent. His advocacy for Palestine was a significant concern for him, as evidenced by his decision to skip a pre-match press conference to attend the Act x Palestine charity event in Barcelona in January.
Guardiola expressed his deep empathy for Gaza's suffering, particularly the impact on children. He recounted how images of children pleading for their mothers among the rubble deeply affected him and emphasized the abandonment they face. Wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, he questioned the global response to these tragedies.
In a February press conference before a Carabao Cup semi-final match against Newcastle United, Guardiola addressed the killing of innocent people worldwide, urging others not to remain silent in the face of injustice. He highlighted various global conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Russia, and Sudan, stating that these issues are a collective human problem.
Guardiola stressed that his concerns transcend politics, focusing on the protection of human life. He emphasized the importance of helping people in distress, regardless of their circumstances, and highlighted the plight of refugees fleeing wars.
During his acceptance speech for an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester in June 2025, Guardiola shared his deep pain over the situation in Gaza, underscoring that his concern is rooted in humanity. He spoke about the emotional impact of the war on him, particularly as he sees his own children in the suffering of Gaza's infants.
The Spanish coach has consistently presented his stance as humanitarian, opposing the killing of innocent civilians regardless of nationality or religion. His outspoken activism has distinguished him from many other high-profile football managers.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in extensive casualties and destruction. Since October 2023, the Israeli army's actions have led to over 72,000 deaths, predominantly women and children, with injuries exceeding 172,000, severely impacting Gaza's infrastructure. Despite a ceasefire in October 2025, daily violations continue, causing additional fatalities and injuries, as reported by Gaza's Health Ministry.
