Ankara: Stargazers across Trkiye and the Northern Hemisphere are preparing to witness the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower overnight on Wednesday, benefiting from unusually dark sky conditions created by a new moon. The celestial event is set to captivate onlookers with its dazzling display of shooting stars.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Perseids occur as Earth passes through debris left by comet Swift-Tuttle. As tiny particles burn up in the atmosphere at high speeds, they produce bright streaks of light, commonly referred to as shooting stars. In Trkiye, astronomers expect the optimal viewing conditions to occur between 2:00 a.m. (2300GMT) and sunrise on Thursday.

Observers across the region are advised to venture away from city lights and seek locations with clear horizons for the best experience. No special equipment is required to enjoy this natural spectacle. Under ideal conditions, up to about 100 Perseid meteors could be visible per hour during the peak, though actual numbers may vary depending on weather, light pollution, and other observing conditions.

Adding to the excitement, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Trkiye (TUBITAK) is hosting its 28th Sky Observation Event at Emre Lake in the western province of Afyonkarahisar from August 12-15. Hundreds of visitors have gathered in the region to participate in expert-led telescope sessions and dedicated Perseid stargazing activities.

The Perseid meteor shower remains active through late August, but the main viewing period is anticipated to be the night of August 12-13 this year. Coinciding with this spectacle, a total solar eclipse is also set to occur on Wednesday, marking a significant day for astronomy enthusiasts.
