Peruvian Candidate with Notorious Name Wins Mayoral Election

Queropalca:A candidate named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores became the virtual winner of the mayoral election held in the Andean district of Queropalca. His name drew significant attention due to its association with infamous 20th-century dictators.

According to Anadolu Agency, Flores, who is 45 years old, ran for the Ahora Nacion party and secured 229 votes, making up 34.54% of the valid votes. His closest competitor, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano from Renovacion Popular Peru, garnered 204 votes, equivalent to 30.77%. Itala Yovana Santillan Vara of Pais para Todos received 187 votes, or 28.21% of the valid ballots.

Two other candidates received fewer votes, with Alianza para el Progreso obtaining 35 votes, or 5.28%, and Partido Democratico Somos Peru receiving eight votes, accounting for 1.21%. In total, 707 ballots were cast, with 663 being valid, 30 blank, and 14 invalid.

Flores led his nearest rival by 25 votes, with a 42-vote margin over the third-place contender. Local media outlet Ahora Regional confirmed that Flores emerged as the virtual winner, with all district tally sheets counted by electoral authorities, although the formal proclamation was still pending.

The candidate's name evokes memories of Adolf Hitler, Nazi Germany's leader, and Benito Mussolini, Italy's Fascist dictator. Interestingly, Peru has previously seen another politician named Hitler. Hitler Alba served as mayor of the Andean town of Yungar from 2011 to 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. The recent election was part of Peru's 2026 regional and municipal elections, held on October 4 to elect local authorities nationwide.
