Poland Deploys Counterterrorism Units Amid Sabotage Threats Near Russian Border

Warsaw:Poland has deployed counterterrorism police near its border with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave following warnings of potential sabotage activities. This development was reported by broadcaster TVP World on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the operation in the northeast is led by the police and involves the military, border guards, and intelligence services. Police chief Marek Boron stated that a significant number of officers, including those from other provinces and specialized counterterrorism units, have been deployed to secure the border area.

The security measures are in response to possible events that could lead to acts of sabotage, based on information from external agencies. Boron emphasized the need to protect both the citizens residing near the border and the facilities in the area from potential threats that could endanger society.

Security sources cited by Polish broadcaster RMF FM revealed that Poland received warnings last week from its Military Intelligence Service and allied intelligence agencies. These warnings indicated that armed groups might attempt to cross the border from Russia soon.

In response to speculation, the police clarified that the instruction for provincial commanders to maintain full readiness from November 2 to 8 is related to sabotage threats, not to ongoing tensions surrounding Poland's Constitutional Tribunal.

Kaliningrad, located on the Baltic Sea, shares borders with Poland and Lithuania, both NATO members. The nearby Suwalki Gap, a narrow land corridor separating Kaliningrad from Belarus, is of strategic importance as it connects the Baltic states with other NATO allies.
