Warsaw: Poland will extend temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 4 due to continued concerns over irregular migration, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski announced on Sunday. This decision follows a high-level security meeting with provincial governors and border service officials.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kierwinski stated that the regulation has been submitted to the European Commission for formal notification. He highlighted increased pressure on Poland's eastern frontier, noting that efforts to block migration routes through Belarus and Russia have shifted migrant movements toward other parts of the EU.

Kierwinski remarked on the effectiveness of Poland's border barrier, stating that its "98% tightness" has resulted in Belarusian and Russian services and illegal migration moving to other sections. He emphasized that the primary task is to close migration routes to Lithuania and Latvia, a responsibility shared with other EU partners.

Poland initially reintroduced checks at its internal Schengen borders last year, citing migration-related and security concerns. The latest extension will maintain these measures for an additional two months.
