Poland Urges China to Leverage Influence for Ukraine Ceasefire

Warsaw: Poland has identified China as the only global power capable of compelling Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, emphasized this position during his address at the Warsaw Forum, highlighting the strategic leverage Beijing holds over Russia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sikorski pointed out that China's influence on Russia has been significant in past geopolitical maneuvers, such as Beijing's role in persuading Moscow to withdraw troops from Kazakhstan in January 2022. He expressed that China's potential to exert pressure on Russia remains unmatched, though it remains unclear if Beijing would choose to exercise this power.

Sikorski also discussed Poland's efforts to secure the European Union's eastern frontier, mentioning the substantial investment in a border fence. He noted that while Chinese officials have expressed support for a ceasefire, concrete actions are essential to turn these declarations into reality. Furthermore, he critiqued Russia's military strategies, noting Ukraine's unexpected successes and asserting that time favors Ukraine over Russian President Vladimir Putin.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot echoed concerns over Europe's security landscape, noting a shift in Europe's defense posture due to the conflict. He highlighted Europe's commitment to bolstering its military capabilities and taking charge of its security, reflecting a more assertive stance not seen in past years.

Barrot asserted that Europe's increased military readiness and unity are crucial responses to Russia's actions, which he described as provocations intended to undermine European support for Ukraine. Instead, these actions have strengthened European resolve and support for Ukraine.
