Warsaw: The EU will discuss a "balanced," unified response to the US tariffs on steel and aluminum, said Poland's prime minister on Tuesday, adding that trade wars are 'unnecessary.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized the need for consultations with all member states regarding the US-imposed tariffs. He mentioned that these discussions are slated to occur the following day and assured that the European Union will craft an appropriate yet balanced response.

Tusk highlighted the adverse effects that trade wars can have, particularly on consumers and producers within allied nations. "Trade or customs wars are unnecessary, because they always bring negative consequences," he stated, stressing the importance of maintaining friendly relations.

The context of these discussions follows US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, with an announcement from the White House confirming that these tariffs will apply universally, with no country exempted. Trump further cautioned that any retaliatory measures from affected countries will prompt the US to increase tariffs again.

Tusk provided specific data, noting that Poland exports 411 tons of aluminum to the United States compared to 264,000 tons to other countries. He conveyed a sense of preparedness rather than alarm, indicating Poland's readiness to address any fallout from the US tariffs.

In his efforts to coordinate the EU's response, Tusk also mentioned his conversation with Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, reaffirming that the EU reaction to the tariffs would remain balanced.
