Accra:Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on Saturday afternoon after being discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital. He underwent surgery on his right lung earlier in the week.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the pontiff spent five days in the hospital and was released after doctors confirmed through blood tests and a chest X-ray that he was fit to leave. Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora conducted the examinations.
Upon his return, the Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Leo XIV would lead the Sunday noonday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace. Before leaving the hospital, he celebrated Mass in a worship room on the hospital's 10th floor.
The pope had revealed on October 11 that a mass was detected in his lung, necessitating surgery. The operation, which took place on October 13, lasted 90 minutes and involved the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung. Subsequent tissue analysis confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma. The Vatican stated that all his scheduled engagements through October 20 were canceled to allow for his recovery.
