The National Council, Cyprus' top advisory body, meets today at 10am under the chairmanship of President Nikos Christodoulides. The President will brief the party leaders on the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem, with the meeting taking place in the shadow of the UN Secretary-General's reports on Thursday on UNFICYP and his Good Offices mission. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis has stated that the National Council has been convened to inform the political leadership and hold a necessary exchange of views, among other things, on the last meeting the President Christodoulides had with the UNSG's Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar. He said that in today's session, an evaluation, an exchange of views and coordination on the next steps will be held. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the S wiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Last January, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Cuellar as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
