President hopes for positive developments soon on Cyprus peace talks

President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Wednesday that he hopes that "very soon, in the next 24 hours" there will be positive developments towards the resumption of the talks, in his address at the presentation of the Historical Anniversary Album. The event was organized by the "Evagoras" Gymnastics Club of Famagusta, at the Olympic Hall in Nicosia. The President of the Republic said that "despite all the challenges and difficulties, we are doing everything possible to reach "that blessed day". Referring to his recent visit to New York where he addressed the UN General Assembly, he said that "I can tell you with certainty that no one, no one, is questioning our intentions and our political will. Intention, will, perseverance, clear objectives, full understanding and making the most of international circumstances, which have not only activated international interest in the Cyprus problem, but also create substantial prospects for the resumption of the talks." Referring to the Turkish-occu pied city of Famagusta, known as Varosha, where the athletics club presenting the historical album is from, the President said that "Famagusta has always reigned", even under occupation. "It reigns both through its monuments and its history, but it reigns much more through its people and its organised groups." He added that "the people of Famagusta, expelled from their ancestral homes as refugees, not only found the strength to stand on their own feet" but also infused the whole of Cyprus with their action and efforts. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Source: Cyprus News Agency
