President stresses to CoE SG importance of implementing ECHR judgments

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has stressed the importance of implementing European Court of Human Rights judgements to the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset during a meeting they had on Thursday, in New York. "Matters to do with modern challenges in Europe and the Council of Europe's strategic orientation, as well as regional developments, developments in the Cyprus issue and the situation in Ukraine were discussed during the meeting," a Presidency press release says. President Christodoulides assured Berset of the Republic of Cyprus' commitment in continuing its close cooperation with the Council of Europe with a view to implementing everything agreed during the 4th Council of Europe Summit which took place in Iceland, it adds. The President "further stressed the importance of ECHR decisions being implemented." "In this context he pointed out the need for the Council of Europe to continue to closely monitor matters which have to do with human rights violations in Cypru s, as a result of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation, and in particular to do with the enclaved and the missing persons, as well as the continued usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied areas," the press release concludes. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. The European Court of Human Rights sentenced Turkey in numerous cases, brought forward by Greek Cypriots, concerning the violation of their fundamental human rights, following the 1974 invasion. In May 12, 2014 , the ECHR ruled in its final decision that Turkey is obliged to pay 90 mln euro to the Republic of Cyprus for the violation of human rights during and after the 1974 invasion.
