Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday congratulated Nizar Amidi on his election as president of Iraq.

According to Anadolu Agency, a Kremlin statement conveyed Putin’s hope for Amidi’s contributions to the further development of ‘traditionally friendly’ Russian-Iraqi relations. The statement included Putin’s sincere congratulations and wishes for Amidi’s success in his high position as the President of the Republic of Iraq.

Nizar Amidi was elected as Iraq’s president after securing 227 out of 249 votes in the parliament’s second round on Saturday. This election marks Amidi’s entry as the country’s sixth president since 2003.
