Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday emphasized the need to enhance political and diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in the Middle East, particularly concerning Iran, during separate phone conversations with Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Anadolu Agency, a Kremlin statement following the call with Netanyahu revealed that Putin reiterated his fundamental stance on promoting political and diplomatic measures aimed at securing the region's stability and security. The discussions between Putin and Netanyahu highlighted the situation in the Middle East, with Moscow expressing its willingness to continue mediation efforts and encourage dialogue among all involved parties. In a separate communication, the Kremlin disclosed that Putin also engaged in a phone call with Pezeshkian. US President Donald Trump has frequently declared support for Iranian protesters amid widespread anti-government demonstrations in the country, although he tempered his language during recent remarks at the White House. Concurrently, Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of supporting "riots" and "terrorism" within the protests. While official figures on casualties and detainees remain undisclosed, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates over 2,600 fatalities, encompassing both protesters and security personnel.
Earlier in the week, the Russian Foreign Ministry labeled US threats of new military strikes against Iran as "categorically unacceptable," warning of dire repercussions for Middle Eastern stability and global international security. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the US's attempts to pressure Iran's foreign partners with increased trade tariffs, following Trump's declaration of a 25% tariff on countries conducting business with Tehran.
