Qatar and Saudi Arabia Engage in Talks to Address US-Iran Ceasefire

Doha: Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday discussed efforts aimed at de-escalating regional tensions and enhancing security and stability in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, discussions between the two sides over the phone dwelt on developments in the region, particularly the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as stated by the Qatari Foreign Ministry. Sheikh Mohammed and Prince Faisal emphasized the importance of all parties engaging in ongoing mediation efforts. They expressed the necessity of addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue, aiming to reach a sustainable agreement that prevents further escalation.

The discussions also covered bilateral cooperation and explored ways to support and enhance relations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The statement highlighted the significance of maintaining open communication channels to strengthen regional ties.

Regional tensions have been high since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, leading to retaliation from Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, and resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was initiated on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad have yet to yield a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a set deadline, allowing for continued diplomatic efforts toward a permanent resolution to the conflict.
